Guided tour in the Park of Monsters of Bomarzo

The Park of the Monsters, also called Sacred Wood or Villa of Wonders of Bomarzo, is a natural park adorned with numerous basalt sculptures dating back to XVI century and depicting mythological animals, gods and monsters.

The artistic and cultural complex is unique in the world in its particularity.
The park was designed in 1550 by Neapolitan architect Pirro Ligorio on commission for Prince Pier Francesco Orsini, called Vicino, Lord of Bomarzo, a man of leadership and arms, endowed with a singular personality.

The established place to build the Sacred Wood was an Etruscan site and in late Roman times it was called Pomartium. In the early centuries of Christianity it became a bishopric.
For the Prince, Bomarzo wood rapresented a return to nature, in its most free and fantastic way, almost a reintegration of man into nature, as many philophers in the late 1700 would express as the most important point in their philosophical thinking, like Luois Calude de Saint Marin.

The Sacred Wood, not respecting the sixteenth-century customs, is presented as a completely irregular solution, the different elements are released from each other by any perspective relationship and are not united by any coherence of proportions. Everything is invented and created following iconological criteria that sometimes escape even the most passionate scholars. It is in fact an authentic labyrinth of symbols that envelops anyone who enters it physically or intellectually in a surreal dimension.
