VITERBO UNDERGROUND
Viterbo Underground consists of a grid of tunnels which runs from the historical centre to the city walls. So far, the only practicable section runs for a hundred meters spread over two levels under Piazza della Morte, 3 and 10 meters deep, respectively. The path is dug in the tuff, a volcanic rock which caracterizes Tuscia landscapes. The origin of the tunnels is controversial. According to credited theories, advanced by archeologists and researchers, the first cut into the tuff may go back to the Etruscans. At that time, the structure was probably used as hydraulic system, to collect and channel river and rainwaters and run them where they were needed within a large network of tunnels. In the Medieval times these sites assumed the preset structure: the tunnels became higher, wider and longer, a labyrinth of secret paths wich were used to connect the important and strategic sites of Viterbo. The tunnels lead to main exits of the city and ensure the way out to the people in case of danger or siege.
More recently, the dungeons were exploited by bandits for their business and during Second World War were used as air-raid shelters during the bombing. A guided tour will lead you to discover these magical places, in a journey through history, covering more than 2500 years. The galleries are large, illuminated by LEDs and easily passable.
