Guided tour in Sovana

Sovana, one of the “most beautiful village in Italy”, was an ancient Etruscan city, the value of which is still today well testified by the impressive rock necropolis, and hold’s capital city of Aldobrandeschi. Due to the abandonment occurred in the fifteenth century, it offers basically intact medieval views.

Taking the only access street to the village, you arrive in Piazza del Pretorio, whose herringbone flooring is still partly the original one. The Palazzo dell’Archivio (12th century), the church of Santa Maria, the Palazzo Pretorio, the Palazzo Vescovile, the loggia del Capitano and the Palazzo Bourbon Del Monte harmoniously surround the square itself. Along the road that leads to the Cathedral of Sovana (Co-Cathedral of Saints Peter and Paul, in which the Romanesque and Gothic styles merge) you can see the house of Ildebrando Aldobrandeschi who became Pope in 1073 with the name of Gregory VII.

The Cascate del Mulino di Saturnia (“waterfall of the mill”) of Saturnia are one of the most suggestive and fascinating areas in Tuscan Maremma. It is a site formed naturally, starting from travertine rock, dug by the waterfall of thermal sulphurous waters.

The free baths of Saturnia are famous especially for their beauty: small natural pools are constantly filled up with water coming from the other waterfall, far from noises, stress and daily caos.
